Usually oral as iron sulphate or similar salt. Can be given intravenously or, with some preparations, intramuscularly. A parenteral route is indicated when an oral formulation is poorly tolerated or when the proximal small bowel is diseased (e.g. inflammatory bowel disease) or absent (e.g. due to gastric or duodenal surgery).
