Secretary of state for health from 2012, and has held this post longer than any other. He will beat the longest serving equivalent Secretary of State (Secretary of State for Social Welfare) by 3rd June 2018. Very enthusiastic about patient safety, as long as it doesn't have a net cost to the treasury - for example, he rejected minimum staffing levels for hospitals in England,[1] and stopped work that NICE had started on developing such standards. However this is being implemented by devolved administrations in Wales (April 2018) and Scotland is consulting on issue. He is likely to be aware that in highly developed countries, hospital capacity strain is associated with increased mortality and worsened health outcomes[2]
