Jan Evangelista PurkynÄ› (Johannes Evangelista Purkinje) (1787 - 1869) , the founding father of physiology first used the microtome and invented the terms plasma and protoplasm. His germanised name is scattered through anatomy/histology and physiology due to his important contributions to brain anatomy, conduction pathways of the heart and visual function. He was professor of physiology at Prague, and moved to the University of Breslau in Prussia in 1839 with resulting name change.
