The KEAP1 gene codes for the 624 amino acid precursor to Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1. It is a substrate adapter protein for the E3 ubiquitin ligase complex formed by cullin-3 and E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase RBX1 and targets nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 for ubiquitination and degradation by the proteasome, thus resulting in the suppression of its transcriptional activity and the repression of antioxidant response element-mediated (ARE) detoxifying enzyme gene expression.
