Appears to be in most human tissues the key enzyme in normal fructose metabolism via the fructose-1-phosphate pathway. Coded by the KHK gene it is a 298 amino acid peptide that catalyzes the reaction ATP + D-fructose <=> ADP + D-fructose 1-phosphate. There are two isoforms produced by alternative splicing and the shorter peripheral isoform has a lower expression level than the central form well expressed in liver, kidney and intestine.
