German, diminutive of knochen (bone)

A knuckle is a common term for the joints of the fingers, most commonly the metacarpophalangeal joints, although the interphalangeal joints are sometimes called knuckles. The term is also often used for the posterior skin surface overlying these joints, particularly the apices formed when the joints are fully flexed.

Given the multiple meanings attributed to the word it is best avoided and the joint in question specified using correct anatomical terms.

'Knuckle' may be used to refer to a structure or part of a structure shaped like a knuckle, that is with a sharp angulation or rounded protuberance.
