West African in origin. Kwashiorkor, literally first-second, meaning 'rejected one' as the arrival of a new baby results in weaning of the older infant from breast milk to often low protein diets.

Manifestation of malnutrition. Regarded as a protein deficiency syndrome, but possibly related to accompanying deficiencies in other micronutrients.
