The low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 8 is processed from the 963 amino acid peptide coded by the LRP8 gene at 1p32.3. It is O-glycosylated and five alternatively spliced isoforms exist. It is the cell surface receptor for reelin and apolipoprotein E containing ligands. A soluble form acts on reelin which is important in neurological development and cell adhesion.
