Lamarckism (heritability of acquired characteristics, soft inheritance) is the idea that an organism can pass on characteristics that it acquired during its lifetime to its offspring. This was somewhat destroyed by the discovery of Mendelian inheritance and DNA mutation looking sufficient to explain evolution as understood by Darwinism. Epigenetics now allows a distinct and very important role for this concept in human disease as part of modern evolutionary theory.
