Organ of phonation.

Innervated by the recurrent laryngeal nerve, when it gets around to it.

In the adult, the vocal cords are the narrowest part of the respriatory tree above the carina - hence cuffs on endo-tracheal tubes.


Just below the larynx is the Crico-thyroid membrane, which all doctors should be ready to make a hole in, in any place and time.
