Latency-associated peptide can be regarded as the membrane bound isoform of transforming growth factor beta-1 when not cleaved from transforming growth factor beta-1.

Transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-beta-1) is cleaved from latency-associated peptide (LAP). It is from a 390 amino acid pro-peptide coded by the TGFB1 gene at 19q13.1. Amino acids 30 to 278 make up latency-associated peptide and amino acids 279 to 390 transforming growth factor beta-1.
