A treatment has a legacy effect if the intervention, when discontinued, leads to long term decreased risk of outcome. An example is intensive oral therapy for glucose control which compared to diet control alone results in lower ten year death from any cause. Treating diabetic patient's blood pressure on the other hand has no long term legacy effect on death, although a short term one on microvascular complications.Needs citation
