Leonard Hayflick (1928 - ?) is the microbiologist who:

  • First isolated Mycoplasma pneumoniae on Hayflick media
  • Realised the significance of the Hayflick limit[1] that had been noted by 1961[2]
  • Developed the human cell line WI-38 strain used in producing rubella vaccine amongst others (The most widely used and highly characterized normal human cell line which also got him into controversy in 1975 for commercial exploitation of publicly funded research)[3]
  • Contributed significantly to gerontology[4].
