Introduction
A tetracycline antibiotic.
Clinical Use
Despite antibiotic resistance limiting their general usefulness, tetracyclines remain the treatment of choice for:
- Chlamydia
- Trachoma
- Psittacosis
- Non-gonococcal urethritis, salpingitis and lymphogranuloma venereum
- Rickettsia
- Brucellosis (in combination with Rifampicin)
- Lyme disease (Borrelia)
Indications
- Acne - 408mg daily for 8 weeks at least
- Rosacea
- Non-gonococcal urethritis
Administration
Oral 408mg bd (adults) up to 1.632g daily in severe infections.
Clinical Issues
Contra-indications
- Pregnancy as teeth staining in fetus but this effect may be absent with doxycycline
- Children under 12
- Teeth staining and dental hypoplasia
- Renal failure
Cautions and Interactions
- Hepatic failure
- Myasthenia gravis
- SLE
Specific Cautions and Interactions
- Interacts with antacids, iron salts to decrease absorption
