This is an episode of mood disorder characterised by elevated or irritable mood together with some or all of

  • increased activity
  • distractibility
  • talkativeness
  • thoughts racing
  • increased self-esteem
  • decreased need for sleep
  • excessive shopping, sex, risk taking behaviours etc with potential to cause harm

These should be causing a marked impairment of functioning, and not be explained by an organic cause. There may or may not be frank psychotic symptoms e.g. hallucinations or delusions.

Hypomania is a milder form, with similar but less severe symptoms, out of keeping with usual self, but without major impairment of functioning.
