Mathematical modelling can be used to, for example:
- Estimate the impact of introducing a novel healthcare intervention, such as a treatment, or a form of disease prevention, such as a vaccination programme
- Estimate the level of service required to meet needs, either routinely, or in the event of an epidemic
- Predict the course of an epidemic
While such modelling can be informative for interventions over short time spans, the challenges over longer time spans with regard to population projections illustrate that prediction is far from an exact science.
