The simplest alcohol. Toxic, severely so in moderate quantities, not a serious biological hazard in casual exposure to vapour. This may become more significant with the development of methanol fuel cells for portable electronic equipment, or the possible development of a methanol economy replacing petroleum as a fuel.
Methanol is metabolised into formaldehyde, which is poisonous. The pathway can be blocked by administering ethanol or fomepizole.
