Midwife (derivation - old German, mit weib - "with [a/the] woman"): a health care practitioner who provides care to a woman during pregnancy and childbirth.Under UK law (Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors Act 1997 (c. 24) s16) except in emergency only a Registered Midwife or Registered Medical Practitioner (or a student undergoing training to attain such registration) may attend a woman in childbirth
