Mucus is a secretion of goblet cells that characteristically contains mucins and other components that protect the lining of the mouth, gut, respiratory tract and urogenital tract and also have protective roles with the eyes and inner ear. A number of diseases such as cystic fibrosis and ulcerative colitis can be seen essentially as a deficiency in effective mucus production.
