Multifocal motor neuropathy is an autoimmune condition affecting lower motor neurons only with characteristic EMG findings of conduction blocks. IgM anti-GM1 ganglioside antibodies may be positive. Unlike motor neurone disease it is treatable. However its treatment may differ from that of a closely related condition multifocal acquired demyelinating sensory and motor neuropathy which is steroid responsive and not associated with anti-GM1 antibodies.

Presentation

  • Distal arm muscles
  • Distribution may initially be that of peripheral nerves
  • Slow progression
  • Rarely cranial nerves or Respiratory muscles

Treatment

Immunomodulatory therapy with:

Note that steroids have caused deterioration.
