Neoplasia is an umbrella term for conditions involving an imbalance of cell division and cell death (more cell division than cell death), leading to overgrowth of a line of cells.
Neoplasias include conditions such as:
- cancer (aka carcinoma) - which strictly refers only to neoplastic conditions of cells derived from embryological ectoderm, such as epithelial tissue, gut...
- sarcoma - which strictly refers to neoplastic conditions of cells derived from embryological mesoderm such as bones and muscle
