The external nose and nasal cavity are the two parts of the nose. The nostrils are lined with vibressae, hairs which trap inhaled particles. The cavity of the nose is lined with respiratory epithelium and the mucosa has a rich blood supply. Three pairs of turbinates on each side produce turbulent air flow, which allows the nasal cavity to warm and moisten inhaled air. At the top of the nasal cavity lie olfactoy nerve fibres, which penetrate the cribiform plate. The two nasal cavities are separated by the nasal septum.
