Nyctalopia
From Ganfyd
ΕΤΥΜΟΛΟΓΙΑ Greek. nyktos-night, al(aos)-blind or obscure, ops-eye
- Note the French translation of this Greek is seeing in the night which has become an issue in interpreting literature from the non-English speaking world
Nyctalopia is a poor term to use as English speaking and Continental ophthalmologists use it to mean the exact opposite physiologically:
- English school: means 'seeing in the day so is used as technical term for night blindness (usually due to selective rod cells dysfunction).
- Continental school: means day blindness as in total colorblindness (ie usually due to selective dysfunction of cone cells. Contrast with hemeralopia.
