Inflammation of the oesophagus. A common cause of dyspepsia, usually due to acid reflux, perhaps promoted by an hiatus hernia. Often treated with ulcer healing drugs.

It can also be caused by ingestion of caustic acids.

Oesophagitis can be diagnosed by barium swallow or Oesophagogastroduodenoscopy (OGD).
