Oophorectomy is the removal of the ovaries surgically. Commonly done to treat ovarian cancer or prevent it in those with the BRCA1 mutation. A salpingectomy almost always performed at the same time (salpingo-oophorectomy) as most ovarian' cancers are now thought to arise from neoplastic precursors in the Fallopian tube epithelium rather than the ovary itself.
