In computing, the software which provides the most direct interface with the hardware of the computer. It handles tasks which are common to multiple applications, such as memory allocation and file management.

List of Operating Systems

This is a list of operating systems (OS) most likely to be encountered in the NHS and probably many other healthcare systems in the world. On PCs/desktops:

  • Microsoft Windows XP
  • Microsoft Windows 2000
  • Apple Mac OS X

On servers:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • UNIX variants e.g. FreeBSD
  • GNU/Linux
