Introduction

Reduces dietary fat absorption by about 30% , it is a derivative of Streptomyces toxytricini's endogenous lipstatin[1]

Clinical Use

Indications

Administration

Oral 120mg before or within an hour of a main meal. Usually twice to three times a day.

Special advice

  • Do not take if meal missed or has no fat
  • Only continue past 12 weeks if 5% weight loss
  • See NICE guidelines on Obesity(Dec 2006)
  • Co-prescription of vitamin supplements has been recommended.

  • Gastric and pancreatic lipase inhibitor
  • 99% protein bound
  • Minimal absorption
  • Peak concentration 8 hours after dose
  • Elimination t1 / 2 14-19 hours
  • 96% excreated in faeces, 83% unchanged
