For medical use, these are usually portable devices designed to deliver home oxygen. The device works on the principle that certain materials, typically zeolites, have a predilection to adsorb gases at high pressure and then release them again at low pressure. This phenomenon of pressure swing adsorption, when performed rapidly, effectively removes nitrogen from the feed gas (in this case atmospheric air) and increases the proportion of oxygen.

The device usually comprises a compressor (to generate pressure) and two cylinders, one containing the zeolite and another to release the oxygen into.
