Despite antibiotic resistance limiting their general usefulness, tetracyclines remain the treatment of choice for:

Indications

Administration

Oral 250mg qds (adults) up to 500mg qds daily in severe infections.

Clinical Issues

Contra-indications

  • Pregnancy as teeth staining in fetus but this effect may be absent with doxycycline
  • Children under 12
  • Renal failure

Cautions and Interactions

Specific Cautions and Interactions

  • Interacts with antacids, iron salts and milk to decrease absorption
