The term Patient controlled analgesia (PCA) is hardly a new concept but is usually used in the context of post operative pain control where the use of parental infusion analgesic bolus and even rate of infusion may be more effective if put under a safe degree of patient control. It reflects an historic approach to pain control mainly related to narcotics, technological limitations, simplification of management disregarding individual factors, social and peer issues.
