Programmed cell death 1 ligand 1 is coded by the PDCD1LG1 gene at 9p24 to produce a 290 amino acid peptide which is further processed into a key ligand for the programmed cell death protein 1 that inhibits T cells. It is also involved independently in the IL-2-dependent costimulatory signal, essential for T-cell proliferation and production of IL-10 and interferon gamma. There are three isoforms, with two known as PD-L1I and PD-L1II being produced by alternative splicing.
