Perfusion refers to the supply of blood to a tissue or organ.

A hypoperfused organ may becomes ischaemic and, if severe or acute enough, will result in infarction. Several homeostatic mechanisms operate to ensure adequate perfusion to all the key organs. These mechanisms function at both the microvascular and systemic levels, e.g.

Certain organs require a very tightly regulated perfusion for adequate function, and in particular:

  • Brain auto-regulation
  • Kidney auto-regulation
