Polycystin-1 is a membrane receptor protein with three isoforms produced by alternative splicing of the PKD1 gene at 16p13.3-p13.12. It binds the tumor suppressor protein p53 at up to 4 sites to participate in a negative feedback loop that regulates PKD1 gene transcription[1] It is responsible complexed with polycystin-2, probably in a trimer, for mechanosensation and found in the primary cilium of the apical membrane of tubular cells.

It has a LDL-receptor class A domain and is analogous to polycystic kidney disease protein 1-like 3 which complexed with polycystic kidney disease 2-like 1 protein forms one of the acid taste receptors[2][3].
