The mechanics of pregnancy are assumed to be within the capabilities of medical graduates, but arranging a career around reproduction is a complex business, as is arranging reproduction around a career in such a way as to produce the best compromise.

Maternity Pay

After a full one of year continuous NHS employment, mothers-to-be are entitled to

  • 8 weeks full pay,
  • 18 weeks half pay,
  • then statutory maternity pay [1]

GP registrars must be over 29 weeks gestation at the end of the contract to qualify for maternity benefits.
