Pyuria

Pus in the urine, i.e. neutrophils, but sometimes loosely used to mean any white blood cells in the urine.

Associated with urinary tract infections, but where microbiological culture of urine is negative it is termed sterile pyuria. This does not exclude infection as it may represent partially treated infection or the presence of fastidious organisms that have not cultured (e.g. mycobacterial infection).

Other causes include:

  • Appendicitis
  • Foreign bodies, including renal stones
  • Inflammatory conditions
  • Urinary tract tumours
  • Some drugs
