There are various organisms that cause relapsing fever. The two major vectors are ticks and the human body louse. Tick-borne relapsing fever seems to be associated with multiple soft ticks (family Argasidae) and multiple Borelia spp. Lyme disease is classified as a separate condition and is transmitted by hard ticks(family Ixodidae). However the Borrellia found in some hard ticks also seem to be relapsing fever serotypes[1][2] with unknown health implications presently.
The organisms are not all well classified but include:
- Borrelia hermsii transmitted by ticks[3]
- Borrelia persica transmitted by Ornithodoros tholozani ticks[4]
- Borrelia crocidurae transmitted by Ornithodoros sonrai in Africa[5]
- Borrelia duttonii transmitted by Ornithodoros porcinus in Tanzania[6]
- Borrelia recurrentis transmitted by Pediculus humanus - Louse-borne relapsing fever
