The retinal ganglion cells have receptive fields that are circular with a central, excitatory region and usually an inhibitory concentric surround region. There are multiple types with function also being determined by the photoreceptors they are connected to. While some act as photoreceptors in their own right, others have quite distinctive forms such as:
- Midget cell
- Parasol cell
- Mixed cone cell input both in the central and the surround area of their receptive fields
- Transient response
These also each have subclasses such as[1]:
- ON subclass
- OFF subclass
- ON/OFF subclass
- W-cell
- AOS cell
- ipRGC cell (intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cell)[2]
