Rhabdomyolysis
From Ganfyd
Rhabdomyolysis is the (acute) breakdown of muscle, which can happen after muscle ischaemia and drug toxicity as with neuroleptic malignant syndrome and therapy. It is characterised by:
- A grossly raised creatine kinase usually several hundred or even thousand fold above normal levels.
- Signs and symptoms of a myopathy if generalised or ischaemia if localised.
The major complication is acute renal failure secondary to the myoglobulin load on the glomerular apparatus.
