Circumferential narrowing of the oesophagus shortly before it enters the stomach. It is benign, in the sense that it is not neoplastic, but can be a cause of dysphagia. Diagnosed on barium swallow or oesophagogastroduodenoscopy. May describe a circumferential stricture from more than one aetiology. Treated with dilatation.
First described in 1953 by Schatzki and Gary.[1]
