Selenium - Se . Element. Trace quantities are required for p53 gene activity. Varies in level according to place. Brazil nuts contain it.
| There is no evidence to recommend selenium supplementation in those without a demonstrated deficiency state.[1] |
Deficiency is associated with cardiomyopathy, sometimes known toponymously as Keshan disease. Deficiency per se may not be responsible, but may make the individual more susceptible to viral infections.[2]. There are other potential associations of deficiency as with prostatic cancer[3].
Excess amounts may be associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes[4].
Selenium sulphide is used as a lotion or shampoo for treatment for dandruff and fungal skin infections, e.g. tinea capitis or pityriasis versicolor.
