An organ essential for maintaining homeostasis with the surroundings, it is the external epithelial covering of the body and is continuous with the mucosa of the internal epthelial covering of the respiritory and gastrointestinal tracts. It has three primary layers:
- Epidermis
- The external outermost layer of the skin which is waterproof and acts as a barrier to infection and minor trauma.
- Dermis
- Composed of connective tissue, it has key nutritional, functional and structural roles
- Papillary region is adjacent to the epidermis
- Reticular region
- Composed of connective tissue, it has key nutritional, functional and structural roles
- Hypodermis
- Optional third layer whose main function is for fat storage.

- Temperature homeostasis
- Water homeostasis
