Somatostatin

Somatostatin is a peptide hormone with two active forms produced by cleavage of its porpeptide into a forteen amino acid chain and a twenty eight amino acid chain. It is secreted by the:

  • Hypothalamus
  • δ cells of:
    • Stomach
    • Intestine
    • Pancreas

and has its effects via a G-protein-coupled receptor.

It inhibits release of:

thus reducing

  • Rate of gastric emptying
  • Intestinal smooth muscle contractions and blood flow
  • Pancreatic exocrine secretion
