Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) causes tick-borne encephalitis. There are 3 subtypes:

  1. TBEV-Eu (European - Vector Ixodes ricinus)
  2. TBEV-Sib (Siberian - Vector Ixodes persulcatus)
  3. TBEV-FE (Far-Eastern - Vector Ixodes persulcatus)

It has an RNA genome which codes for a polyprotein which is cleaved to:

  • Structural proteins:
    • C - capsid protein
    • prM - precursor M that acts as a chaperon for the E protein (forms an immunogenic non infective icoshedral particle)
    • E - envelope protein
  • Non-structural proteins:
    • NS1 - immunogenic as a hexameric complex
    • NS2A
    • NS2B
    • NS3
    • NS4A
    • NS4B
    • NS5
