Thoracic outlet

May be used to refer to either the superior opening of the thorax (also termed thoracic inlet which is what is actually meant in the term thoracic outlet syndrome) or the lower opening which is closed by the diaphragm.

Bounded posteriorly by T12, laterally by the costal margin and anteriorly by the xiphisternal joint.

Structures passing through it include the oesophagus, the aorta, the inferior vena cava and many nerves.
