The thoracodorsal nerve is a branch of the posterior cord of the brachial plexus.

The nerve leaves the posterior cord between the upper subscapular nerve and lower subscapular nerve. It accompanies the subscapular artery along the posterior wall of the axilla at the medial border of the scapula, running over teres major to supply latissimus dorsi through its lateral border.
