Tremor

A rhythmical oscillation caused by contraction of opposing muscle groups in the body. Several classification systems:

  1. Observational
    • Rest tremor
      • observed when body part completely at rest and supported against gravity
    • Postural tremor
      • Observed when body part actively acting against gravity (eg arm extension)
    • Kinetic tremor
      • Observed with voluntary movement (eg writing or drawing)
    • Intention tremor
      • Observed when trying to reach a visual target (eg trying to touch examiners finger)
  2. Pathological
