A rhythmical oscillation caused by contraction of opposing muscle groups in the body. Several classification systems:
- Observational
- Rest tremor
- observed when body part completely at rest and supported against gravity
- Postural tremor
- Observed when body part actively acting against gravity (eg arm extension)
- Kinetic tremor
- Observed with voluntary movement (eg writing or drawing)
- Intention tremor
- Observed when trying to reach a visual target (eg trying to touch examiners finger)
- Rest tremor
- Pathological
- Physiological tremor
- High frequency tremor
- Can be excessive (in say anxiety/stress) in arms, legs and voice - not head
- Essential tremor
- Commonest tremor disorder
- Dystonic tremor
- Usually associated with dystonic posturing or torticollis
