As Euglenozoa they have a 15-30 µm long elongated cell with a flagellum for motility and within the cell tubular mitochrondrium that contain characteristic kineetoplasts as found in other protozoa of the group Kinetoplastida. They prevent the host species from completely eliminating infection (sometimes) by changing their external glycoprotein surface coat.
