From Ganfyd
Hi, Max. Welcome to ganfyd! Thanks for your first edits - you've made a fine start. When it comes to more than one term for the same thing, I'd normally have an article at the preferred name, and redirects from the other names to that article. If you want a page to redirect to another then its code should just be #redirect [[Article Name]], which will make that page redirect to "Article Name". Hope this is helpful. —Rupert (Talk) 10:56, 12 November 2006 (GMT)
Thanks. Hoping to contribute every now and then...
- Blimey you've been busy! I feel guilty about not doing anything during this weekend's on-call now! --A.l.brown 16:21, 26 November 2006 (GMT)
- excellent contributions. I will tone down table on American spellings to house style found here:http://www.ganfyd.org/index.php?title=Help:Table Mlj 23:21, 26 November 2006 (GMT)
- Not sure but will you find the codes for Greek letters on Help:Contribute, ie α β γ δ ε ζ η θ ι κ λ μ ν ξ ο π ρ σ ς τ υ φ χ ψ ω Γ Δ Θ Λ Ξ Π Σ Φ Ψ Ω more useful than character codes in etymology. Refuse to go into this as unlike my daughters I have never studied Greek. Mlj 21:27, 6 December 2006 (GMT)

Nice diagram: I thumbed it and left adjusted it or else it would fight SubjectBox for the right border -such are the rules of cascading style sheets that we have to work withMlj 23:16, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
Molecules
Tend to use ACD/ChemSketch for simple chemicals and artwork and Jmol for proteins. Although ACD/ChemSketch is Windows (I tend to be linux orientated now) it is free although once I started doing molecules for GANFYD I invested in a license as per their terms and conditions. Its all to do with another life as a chemistry graduate in the 1970s before I decided to get real and do something society values more. In those days wrote own Fortran software for 3-D molecular modeling on pen plotters connected to mainframes. Now I can do what took hours with all but manual coloured felt tip changes on an extremely expensive HP plotter in seconds. The output 30 years ago was rather like to what I did for your articles yesterday so who knows if some of the algorithms we used back then are still in todays software somewhere. Cheers Mlj 23:42, 19 April 2007 (BST)
Ok will do cis and trans sometime. Is trivial but means I have to boot into XP and so I tend to batch this sort of workMlj 22:24, 17 May 2007 (BST)
Recursion
Hyperlinking to yourself is possible by creating an intermediate redirect page. The software detects and stops such recursion from the page itself. I will have to remove the recursion in my personal sandbox sometime that illustrates how its done . see Help talk:Hyperlinks
stub --> draft --> work in progress
We have a draft template, which I suppose is a reasonable progression from stub, we can also put the stub template in a section rather than the whole page. Possibly a template for significantly incomplete is worth considering. I think it is accepted WRT wikis, but perhaps not by our profession, that the whole thing is a work in progress. Embryology timeline
Trying to figure out how to create a timeline with Day01, Day40, Week12 etc. Any hints from any other contributors, please?
Best to go in days as I think - timeline is orientated towards years and dates, although you can have decimals I think. You can always put in Text like Week12 at day 56 ! If periods you want to illustrate overlap consider a horizontal time line as in Secretary of state for health (which should need updating by mid June). Mlj 00:12, 21 May 2007 (BST)
Big help, as always. Many thanks. --Max 07:25, 21 May 2007 (BST)
the copyright thing
Copyright owners (of pictures) may not easily understand the ganfyd licence since it is unusual (along with CC and that in WP - the GFDL). I think that having pictures we can't properly say to any reader they may reproduce would create increasing trouble as time went on, whereas if we stick to definitely ganfyd or wider (GFDL or "you can use it however you like") licenceed images there will be no increase in work with volume and time. So rather than "copyright owner gives permission" it really needs to be "licenced under ganfyd licence by copyright owner". I suppose we ought to make a page that offers an explanation of the licence and implications for prospective donors. Midgley 09:56, 6 June 2007 (BST)
- I agree with Adrian. In an ideal world you might place the commented out text of the confirmation with the original copyright owner on the page as well so it is visible to those with editing priviledges but not a distractor to the casual reader so something like <!--- licensed under ganfyd licence by X Y Z representing ABC organisation in Email sent to QRS on date ----> I have been rather careful not to use any of the many NHS copyright documents/images I have access to on GANFYD yet as I have never been granted permission by the powers that be and copyright is not an arguement GANFYD wants to get into Mlj 15:52, 6 June 2007 (BST)
Senior IT people
Do not like Linux and libre software...because.... Mlj 00:37, 8 June 2007 (BST)
...Interestingly, that was also a point made by certain senior staff, emphasising their mistrust of Open Source (and advocates thereof). Apparently, it's less reliable and much less rich in capabilities than certain propietary products. News to me! --Max 00:52, 8 June 2007 (BST)
