Students being allowed to edit is certainly being discussed. There are several obvious advantages. However some level of quality control is necessary, and having a doctor as a mentor is probably a good idea. --MoLE 01:48, 20 November 2005 (CET)

Did we find one for Rupert? Midgley 00:21, 30 November 2005 (CET)

Yes - MoLE, who said he was happy on the forum. Rupert 00:53, 30 November 2005 (CET)Rupert

From peter english: Thanks, Rupert!

How did you send me that message? --Penglish 23:05, 6 December 2005 (CET)

Why the disclaimer on your user page, Rupert? --MoLE 10:30, 11 December 2005 (CET)

I don't think the general disclaimer looks very nice, with those capital letters at the top, so I was experimenting with another way of emphasizing that text. Rupert 11:51, 11 December 2005 (CET)

Rupert - any chance of tidying up front page a little. See if the two columns could be aligned the same height even as two columns in same table. My html isnt up to scratch ? thanks Dokane 12:37, 17 January 2006 (CET)

Done. Rupert 13:54, 17 January 2006 (CET)

You're welcome - and also very, very quick! Rupert 13:58, 17 January 2006 (CET)

Any thoughts re: book reviews. I thought giving each book review a full title like "ECG Made Easy", but it is a bit clumsy. I wonder if ISBN would work better with some sort of template. See my comments in Category talk:Book and internet reviews Mark ong

Thanks for correcting my systemic spelling error of propanolol. What a nit I am Mlj 00:45, 17 February 2006 (CET)

You're very welcome. It took me ages with the BNF to "spot the difference!" Happens to everyone, and it's good that you're writing so many new articles - I'm very poor at that, so I tend to stick to housekeeping jobs. Rupert 00:48, 17 February 2006 (CET)

References extension

That really is extremely neat. You ought to release it on meta as I think it will come in very useful. I'm just re-installing the test wiki at dev.ganfyd.org (after I destroyed the old one), and I'll email you the ftp access details so you can try out any future extensions you have with a copy of the software used on ganfyd. --A.l.brown 12:32, 18 February 2006 (CET)

Nice to see it working well on the Statins page.Mark ong
Yes I thought so too. Mlj's done a lovely job. Rupert 00:05, 22 February 2006 (CET)

I can't get the <reference> syntax to display a reference list in the Catalogue namespace. Quite beyond me as to why. Have made same comment to A.L.Brown as you two far more likely to understand such a bug than poor me Mlj 23:28, 21 February 2006 (CET) Ah problem solved ..it was me...thanks for doing this Mlj 23:33, 21 February 2006 (CET)

Eponym

There is a eponyms category already. Partly my fault, as I agree the singular sounds better. Mark ong 01:03, 7 March 2006 (CET)

I was sure there was, but searching for "eponym" didn't find it, weirdly. Thanks for letting me know. Personally, I think the plural sounds better - I only created the page in its singular form, because Conn's syndrome used the singular form. I think I'll put Conn's syndrome into Category:eponyms as that's the better established of the two. Rupert 01:10, 7 March 2006 (CET)
I tend to prefer singular, which is what WP has as policy. We should not take it to extremes, but I would suggest making a redirect... Midgley 20:04, 9 April 2006 (CEST)
There are already 20 articles in Eponyms though. I need to work out how to run bots. Rupert 20:08, 9 April 2006 (CEST)
Any idea why its broken again? Mark ong
BLOODY MEDIAWIKI!!! -and breathe- Well spotted, Mark. Looking at the database, it happened on the 30th April, the same day that I rebuilt the categorylinks table, but apparently after it. Goodness only knows what caused this to happen again though. I've saved the stuff I need for a post mortem, but I'm not going to go into it right now. Rupert (Talk) 23:57, 8 May 2006 (BST)

Lovely Fireplace for those of us burning the midnight oil

Have really appreciated your extension upload-allows someone; who wants to limit his computer language literacy in his dotage(it comes to something when I first wrote in microprocessor assembler (8080) at about your age a year after the processor first came out and almost certainly before you were born); to worry about interface & content. If you ever see a wiki extension that allows regular expression substitution now that would be useful as a ParserFunction. Sorry about not really taking notice of your input as I debugged ChemistryBox just now as I was way off doing otherthings with the new found powers you gave me.Mlj 00:20, 21 April 2006 (BST)

Oh don't worry about the ChemistryBox. I just saw the difference, so thought I'd fix it! Yes, at the age of 27, I am a good deal younger than an 8080! I'm quite jealous actually - I like all the computers can do for me in this day and age, but I sometimes feel like I missed a golden period of discovery and innovation in computing. Was your programming a hobby? Thanks about the fireplace. Rupert (Talk) 00:35, 21 April 2006 (BST)
Programming Hobby:Absolutely...Medicine is far more interesting and keeps me in gravey. Golden age ha- its only in your 20s that you could be mad enough to program through the night for 3 nights to get about 100 lines of assembler code that had to be entered by hex switches working just to prove you could program simple division, with a 4 digit decimal output display, before going back to hours typing Fortran VI on to punchcards for a mainframe to generate 3D molecular models that were half night runs to generate a 2D B & W plot from Xray diffraction data.
Or to spend all day trying to get TeX proper working on MediaWiki! Rupert (Talk) 02:05, 22 April 2006 (BST)

century...

1900 is wrong, can the arithmetic be adjusted do you think? I do like the automation though. Midgley 23:02, 23 April 2006 (BST)

I was about to make a most patronising response. Then I worried a bit - you don't strike me as the sort of person who would get something like that wrong. So I checked. I have lived my whole life thinking the 1900s and the 20th century were the same thing. Oh the shame! I've fixed the template. Rupert (Talk) 23:14, 23 April 2006 (BST)
Nice coding: Theres a way to say default before 1500 to "Middle ages" and before 1100 to "Dark ages" if you specify no value but I can't be bothered debugging tonightMlj 23:22, 23 April 2006 (BST)

Hello!

Thanks for the welcome. I'm not usually so anally retentive (honest, guv; re:eczema article) but I guess the beauty of a site like this is that we can pick up the little things like that. (Can you tell I subscribe to the "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" ideology?!). Not sure I will be able to contribute a lot but you never know. Husband will no doubt be helpful when it comes to HTML coding.....and actually using Wiki, which is not something I have had experience of until now!

Well you've made a fine start. Just to let you know, putting four tildes (~~~~)after things you put on talk pages produces a little signature like this: Rupert (Talk) 21:10, 26 April 2006 (BST)
Ahhhhhhh.....! Getting to grips with things slowly. Nice to see I can use some HTML tags too (which I am vaguely familiar with, possibly-maybe....)Doctorcath 21:33, 26 April 2006 (BST)

Thanks a million Rupert

Have a star (or several hundred) , the code works fine in pharmacology box as far as I can see and I will update Chemistrybox and Biochemistrybox templates soonest. Now I want to make sure I understand the syntax.

{{#urlencode:<string to be converted to url coding and removing naughty characters like spaces> }} is easy enough for someone like me used to javascript.

But {{#replace:(__0__)}} is much more obscure. Is (_0_) another way of referring to the first variable in a template in which case {{#replace:(__1__)}} would refer to the second variable {{{2}}} . But what do you do if thats the case and you have given your passed variables identifiers which is fairly likely as templates increase in complexity. Can't find anything easily on a wikimedia search. Adam has just Emailed me saying he has created a quick and dirty <replace></replace> function. Mlj 22:23, 30 April 2006 (BST)

There's an example here. The __0__ refers to the first parameter of the replace function. The __1__ refers to the second. This is to make it easier to look at your prototype query string and then scan to the end of the replace function to see what's actually being substituted in. Rupert (Talk) 22:35, 30 April 2006 (BST)
I like it without the #replace: being necessary with #urlencode:....obviously not fully tested but I had run into strife when I started doing what you had done orginally on my other templates, at least in a sandboxMlj 23:46, 30 April 2006 (BST)

Thanks again

Started hammering the database as soon as I saw it released. Off to bed having tested it! Mlj 00:42, 8 May 2006 (BST)

Have you tried the podcasts from instantanatomy.com? They only have 4-5 available at any one time, but the current ones are on the GI system. Mark ong

And of course Adam and Adrian. The database passes the tests I have thrown at it. It looks like you three have mutual expertise that mere mortals have to marvel at.Mlj 22:23, 2 June 2006 (BST)

Very kind, but Adrian is the hero of the day. Rupert (Talk) 22:24, 2 June 2006 (BST)
Far too kind. What a team. I've edited the index.html page to do a 2 second redirect to the Main_Page. Was there something more clever that did that there before? Midgley 22:30, 2 June 2006 (BST)
index.html was a placeholder temporarily put there while I ruined the server. I reckon we can get rid of it altogether soon. --A.l.brown 22:54, 5 June 2006 (BST)
I've made it 1 second. Soon it will leave only a smile. Midgley 01:46, 6 June 2006 (BST)

GA template

as in Template:GA - it seemed about time. I think we could do with something suitably restrained to indicate featured articles - we don't have one yet I think, but it can't be long - on the actual article page, and perhaps even this on the article page. We could keep track of them and point to them froma page, as well I suppose. Midgley 18:29, 5 June 2006 (BST)

Well I've just got back. Perhaps I should give a clue. If I tell you that it was Manchester, would you like to guess where specifically within it and why? Rupert (Talk) 13:15, 12 June 2006 (BST)
Was it the set of Coronation Street? :-D --A.l.brown 09:01, 15 June 2006 (BST)

Best of luck tonight and tomorrow. I have finished all 3 link wanted drug pictures so off to do a coroner's report while you get the database savedMlj 23:41, 14 June 2006 (BST)

Oooh! Whats occurring? Sorry, still been pretty useless lately as post exam audit, research and publication catch-up has been forced upon me. --A.l.brown 09:02, 15 June 2006 (BST)
Ganfyd is now running entirely off the new server. I have broken the license, but I can fix that as soon as the internet in my hall of residence is restored. (I'm in the medschool atm.) Rupert (Talk) 14:46, 15 June 2006 (BST)
That's a lie actually. Ganfyd.org is running off the new server. Subdomains not transferred yet. I will though! Rupert (Talk) 15:42, 15 June 2006 (BST)
  • BUG report. Yes I have found one (or two) . The template pararameter manipulation functions have broken somewhere so {{#if:{{{1|}}}|{{{1}}}|{{PAGENAME}}}} doesn't work . I think the parser function is faulty as if I pass parameter 1 to the template all is fine, and {{PAGENAME}} is working so that leaves the logic test,
Now in sorting that out I crashed Firefox 1.504 on Linux twice as I selected to search on Template help. Off to see if I can crash Firefox 1,504 on Windows.Mlj 22:08, 15 June 2006 (BST)
Ok I have now crashed Firefox 1.504 on Linux three times by trying to do multiple searches with after third search trying to select Main, Category Talk User User talk Template and Template talk options. On clicking the Template talk option Firefox exits, Firefox on Windows seems stable. Blame Firefox implimention of selection tick boxes ? Can anyone else dublicate ? I am using the SUSE rpm build of Firefox 1.504.Mlj 22:26, 15 June 2006 (BST)
I can't help with the Firefox crash. That is definitely a Firefox bug, although it's possible that MW is spewing out some pathological output that is triggering it, in which case a MW bug is also implicated. You are right that the parser function #IF was broken--it was always returning true. I don't understand why it has happened now as MW 1.6.7 & ParserFunctions are completely standard. I have been able to fix it though by patching the ParserFunctions extension. Rupert (Talk) 00:41, 16 June 2006 (BST)
Thanks...now off to purge the pages I looked at while identifing the bug. I agree with your analysis that the other bug is likely to be due to two bits of code fighting one another.Mlj 22:41, 16 June 2006 (BST)
It's absolutely bizarre! I may try to work out why, just to satisfy my own curiosity. However now the migration is done, I want to turn my attention to fun programming projects like JMol and so on. Rupert (Talk) 04:54, 17 June 2006 (BST)

References Broken

... British Society of Gastroenterlogists Guidelines. ᅵUNIQ4a1aa33a5dbdf230
-ref-2332c9c656e4d8d300000001-QINU
This is weird, weird behaviour, as no doubt you learnt playing in the sandbox! (I headed straight there to investigate, and found I didn't have to!) It will be to do with this change that came along in 1.6.7: "Extensions, comments, and <nowiki> sections are now handled in a one-pass way which is more reliable and safer. Under earlier versions of MediaWiki, certain extensions could be abused to inject HTML/JavaScript into the page." I will investigate, and fix it, possibly by downgrading to 1.6.6 Rupert (Talk) 19:03, 18 June 2006 (BST)
Certainly a bad bug...that statement by the author of the 1.6.7 version sounds amazing-surely extensions are there to inject HTML onto a page ! Mlj 20:26, 18 June 2006 (BST)
He means by a malicious wiki editor, rather than a malicious extension writer. Rupert (Talk) 20:33, 18 June 2006 (BST)
This is now fixed. Rupert (Talk) 21:01, 18 June 2006 (BST)
Are you burning the midnight oil?. Article on hypertension. when I did usual <ref> [link article details] </ref> and new {{refsec}} at article end I got for first time fatal server error (page not saved...nasty nasty) Can you have a look as reproducible bug with that link which is last of external refernce list on that page...was working a few moments ago on other pages..PS may all be a plot as reference challenges accepted medical dogma!.Mlj 00:26, 21 June 2006 (BST)
No, no midnight oil—it's just that the fix above was a botch. It's better now, although I tarted up the article to move away from the deprecated reference syntax anyway. Any way, I've botched it all back up and it should be fine. And this time I mean it! Rupert (Talk) 12:39, 21 June 2006 (BST)

Replace extension missing

Hi, the replace extension seems to be missing (see Special:Version) (plus some other shenanigans which can be seen on my Sandbox). I can't access the new server in any way shape or form from work so can't put this right myself. Any thoughts? --A.l.brown 09:37, 18 June 2006 (BST)

Yes the replace extension is missing. Is it actually used for anything? If so, I can put it back, but I thought I'd take this opportunity for a bit of spring cleaning. I need to document what I have done, but you will love the new filesystem layout. It makes it absurdly easy to change the mediawiki version—separating any the custom stuff from the installation. I shall make you a username on the new server, and email you details. Also, I'll document the organisation of the webserver. Rupert (Talk) 19:03, 18 June 2006 (BST)
I think I did use the replace extension...give me a toy...Mlj 20:26, 18 June 2006 (BST)
I'm pretty sure that it "only" appears on Help:Advanced functions & Help:Replace/extension, but I'm prepared to be educated. I will get round to Jmol soon enough! How many more toys do you want? Rupert (Talk) 20:42, 18 June 2006 (BST)
The problems with the references extension are fixed. The incorrect rendering of math containing mathrm is due to a missing font. I'm not very well versed in these matters, so I really don't know how to fix it. Might I suggest we don't use the font in question for the time being? Rupert (Talk) 21:24, 18 June 2006 (BST)

pmid did not parse

Rupert, please try this one pubmed:10875302, otherwise <pmid> has worked this afternoon Mlj 21:27, 9 July 2006 (BST)

Two more bugs I am afraid. Happened in article on Retrolental hyperplasia when I tried to use <pmid>. Had to totally revert to old way as
  • Using a bullet with a <pmid>. indents the next bullet...sort of like [1]
  • The <pmid>. parser is falling over in a nasty way with some of the reference numbers on this page. This means that {{refsec}} does not work. I think its when its a review article or old premedline style reference in medline !

Try these<ref>[[Pubmed:15767472|Palmer EA, Hardy RJ, Dobson V, Phelps DL, Quinn GE, Summers CG, et al. 15-year outcomes following threshold retinopathy of prematurity: final results from the multicenter trial of cryotherapy for retinopathy of prematurity. • If you have a space after the number you assume its not a number. Surely you could parse out leading spaces and following white spaces (note: not a major bug, just annoying if you cut and paste with a space as well. Mlj 23:32, 12 July 2006 (BST)

Upload bug

Ah, in my mind up to now sysop is higher than a mere bureaucrat. I think Manville could well have delete page privilleges as he is providing a good structure to anatomy and when you do this if you are anything like me you will spell a category wrong someday and need to delete it. Whatever Upload issue needs checking. What do you think of rights for Manville and Penglish...second opinion welcome as Adam may be too busy worrying about his RITA. ? Mlj 22:10, 2 September 2006 (BST)

I would give sysop status to anyone who wants it, including Manville and Peter. (I'm surprised he's not one already. Make him one if he wants to be, or you think he might want to be.) Nothing that a sysop (or any priviliged user for that matter) can do is particularly hard to revert. (Checking all the revisions to undelete is a bit of a pain, but that only happens rarely - once in my recollection.) The whole permissions system needs to be rationalised really - the blocking stuff is pointless, and clutters up my user interface. It'd be nice to shift that up to a higher level, but I suppose I still wouldn't be rid of it. There are loads of bureaucrats, but that doesn't really matter, although it looks peculiar that there are as many on here as there are on the English Wikipedia! (I think. Roughly.) server details

Hi Rupert. I've had to wipe my home hard drive and start again (long story, involving Windows going wrong, as usual). Could you email me know the login details for the new server (both SSH and FTP) if thats OK? Also, I don't suppose you could fill me in on the architecture (where everything is, which bits are still on the old shared space, etc) as I've kind of lost touch with things over the last few months. Next weekend I plan to finish the reg rewrite.

Thanks but only just. It will be a sobering thought for the rest of my life just how close I came to failing and having to leave. Doing well in the first two years of university was the hardest thing I have had to do so far in my life and it is a poor reflection on my personality that rather than rising to the challenge and applying myself, I coasted and eventually passed as much by luck as judgement. Fortunately, the clinical course suits me much better - I'm feeling keen again and working hard. I was particularly dreading failing because of how much I have enjoyed the 3 weeks we've had so far.
