All medicines and vaccines considered for funding by the Australian Government must first be approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for use in Australia. This guarantees they are safe and clinically effective, but it does not assess their cost-effectiveness.[1] Recommendations about the introduction of new vaccine programmes are made by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC), based upon its assessment of a potential programme's clinical and cost effectiveness. With regard to vaccines, the PBAC is advised, in turn, by the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI).
